"Always listen to experts. They'll tell you
what can't be done, and why. Then do it."
                                                  -- R. A. H.

In with a bang, out with a whimper...

If you look carefully at the header of this magazine you will notice that
the reference to conference machines is missing. That signals the demise
of the conference machine section of the BITLIST, and the end of an era.
Yes, the last of the old-style, non-Relay, chats is no longer active. It
doesn't seem likely that there will be any more. Relay has simply driven
those old chats out of busines. If you recall, this whole thing started
about a year ago when Henry Nussbacher pointed out the bad characteristics
of the single-node chats (mainly high system load and a heavy burden on the
links surrounding the host node). In response to this the Relay conference
machine network came into being, which was more or less a chat with the
added ability to send messages to other Relays. The number of Relays
has grown tremendously in the past year and continues to increase at a
steady rate. The old chats simply could not compete with their speed and
relative acceptance by node administrators. FORUM@TAMCBA is no more.
Rest in Peace. Thanks to Bob Plested for the information.

New file servers...

Brian Nelson is running a new file server for KERMIT users, KERMSRV@UOFT02.
The only valid commands are SEND and DIR. It should be noted that this
file server runs on a VAX, and so has many files that will run under VMS.
In fact, the code for the server itself is available (it is the file
KERMSRV.C). There is a distinct lack of file servers for the VAXen, so this
is a fair breakthrough. If you intend to run this code on your system,
you must be running the jnet software interface with BITNET, and you must
have certain access to the jnet system account. I know because I tried
running the code on YALEVAX5 but did not have sufficient privelege to
append some jnet files to the code (part of the steps involved). As
a courtesy you should inform Brian Nelson at KERMSRV@UOFT02 if you are
going to use the code. As a courtesy to ME you should name the server
something other than KERMSRV.

The other server news comes from A. D. Jensen. The new name server
NDCSNEWS@NDSUVM1 will now perform some file server functions.
You may request files with the following commands:

SENDME fname ftype NETDATA - to receive a file in NETDATA format
SENDME fname ftype PUNCH - to receive a file in PUNCH format

The default format is PUNCH. To recieve an updated list of files,
the command would be:

 SENDME NDCSNEWS FILELIST

If you would like to have a public domain file posted on NDCSNEWS,
please send the file to NDCSNEWS @ NDSUVM1. Space permitting, all
helpful files will be posted.

Note: Because the primary concern of this account is to provide
CSNEWS contact support at this node, the other services
offered may not be available at all times. As well, due
to a break in the link to UMINN1 after 12am CST, this
server is not available during the late night hours.

Digests...

Below is a summary of the changes to the Digests and mailing lists
section of the magazine. To learn how to get on these mailing lists you
can request the files ARPANET SIGLIST1 and ARPANET SIGLIST2 from
any NETSERV file server. The changes:

   BIZARRE-PEOPLE
New mailing list (discussion of recursive descent parsing).
   INFO-JAPAN
New mailing list (discussion of everything Japanese, EXCEPT language).
   INFO-XLISP
New mailing list (XLISP language discussion/coordination).
   mailjc
New mailing list (discussion among christians).
   NIHONGO
New mailing list (discussion of Japanese language).

That is all for this week. At the suggestion of Barry Gates I have moved
the Bitnotes section to the top of the 'list. It seems to make more
sense this way, but if any of you have serious objections, drop me a note.
We aim to please.

                               Virtually;

                                    Chris
                                    (Fuzzyman)
